General guidance, not legal advice
- Each rule page names the Indian law it relies on and the date its sources were last checked. Laws, rules, fines and notifications change, and States can make their own rules and set their own compounding fees, so always check the current official text for your State.
- Advice labelled "India Drive Safe recommendation" is good practice drawn from Indian and international driving manuals. It is not a legal requirement unless the page says so.
- Where this guide and the law, a road sign, a signal or a police officer's direction differ, follow the law, the sign or the officer.
- For advice about your own situation, such as a crash, a challan you dispute or a court case, consult a qualified lawyer.
The knowledge test and practice questions
Our knowledge test is a free study aid. It is not the official learner's licence test and passing it does not entitle you to any licence. The official test is conducted by your RTO or through the Parivahan Sarathi system.
