About the real learner's licence test
Before you can learn to drive on public roads in India you need a learner's licence for the class of vehicle you will drive. To get it, you pass a short computer-based test on road rules and road signs. Depending on your State, you take it at the RTO or online after Aadhaar authentication, and you book it through the Sarathi Parivahan portal.
The test usually has 15 multiple-choice questions and you need 9 correct answers to pass. You get about 30 seconds per question. Some States set a higher pass mark or a different number of questions, so always read the instructions for your State. If you fail, you can book the test again.
How to prepare
- Learn the signs first: read Road signs in India, then take the road sign test.
- Read the rules you are less sure about, such as right of way at junctions, overtaking and parking.
- Study the questions and answers list (also as a PDF).
- Take this mock test several times until you pass easily, then try the harder full knowledge test.
Passing the learner's test is only the start. Read Learning to drive & your licence to make the most of the learning period.
