Getting a licence is the start of learning to drive, not the end. This section explains how the learner's licence and driving licence work in India and how to use the learning period to become a genuinely safe driver.
A driving licence is compulsory for the class of vehicle you drive. The minimum age is 16 for motorcycles up to 50 cc, 18 for cars and 20 for transport vehicles. A learner's licence is valid for six months, learners must display L-plates and drive with a licensed person beside them, and the driving test can be taken after 30 days. Driving without a licence, or letting someone unlicensed drive, carries a ₹5,000 fine. The section also covers licences and adapted vehicles for people with disabilities, and the International Driving Permit for driving abroad.
