Overtaking is one of the most dangerous manoeuvres on Indian roads, especially on two-lane highways where you share the road with oncoming traffic. Most overtaking crashes happen because a driver started without enough clear road, or could not get back to the left in time.
Regulation 14 of the Motor Vehicles (Driving) Regulations, 2017 makes overtaking from the right the normal rule, lists the limited situations in which passing on the left is allowed, and forbids overtaking that would endanger or impede other traffic. This section explains how to judge the gap, where overtaking is unsafe or prohibited, how to signal, how to return to the left without cutting in, and what to do when someone is overtaking you.
