Choose an answer to see straight away whether it is right, and why. Read the rule first if you need to.

Question 1 of 11

On an ordinary two-way road in India, where should your vehicle normally be?

Show the answer

Answer B. India drives on the left. Keep generally to the left of the carriageway so oncoming traffic passes on your right, but leave sensible clearance from kerbs, drains, parked vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists.

Question 2 of 11

On a multi-lane carriageway, which vehicles must use the left lane except when passing an obstruction or slower vehicle?

Show the answer

Answer A. Indian regulations require heavy vehicles and speed-restricted vehicles to use the left lane on multi-lane roads, leaving it only to overtake or pass an obstruction, and to return to it afterwards.

Question 3 of 11

Another vehicle is overtaking you. What should you do?

Show the answer

Answer B. Keep a predictable line to the left. Do not move right to discourage the overtake, do not accelerate, and avoid sudden movements, so the other driver can return safely.

Question 4 of 11

Approaching a blind bend on a two-way road, where should you position your vehicle?

Show the answer

Answer B. Keep well to the left and slow down. Cutting towards the centre of a blind bend can put your vehicle directly in the path of oncoming traffic.

Question 5 of 11

The left edge of the road is broken and full of potholes. What should you do?

Show the answer

Answer B. An imperfect edge is not a reason to move towards oncoming traffic. Slow down and pick the safest line while keeping properly to the left.

Question 6 of 11

On a dual carriageway (a road divided by a median), which carriageway do you normally use?

Show the answer

Answer C. On a divided road you use the left carriageway unless a police officer or a sign directs otherwise. Never drive against the flow of traffic.

Question 7 of 11

A parked truck blocks your side of a two-way road, and a car is coming towards you. What should you do?

Show the answer

Answer D. You may move right to pass an obstruction only when there is enough space. Never force oncoming traffic to brake or leave the road because your side is blocked.

Question 8 of 11

Why should you leave space between your car and parked vehicles on your left?

Show the answer

Answer D. Keeping left does not mean hugging parked vehicles. Allow for doors opening and pedestrians stepping out from between vehicles.

Question 9 of 11

On a road with marked lanes, what is driving across two lanes (straddling the line) likely to cause?

Show the answer

Answer D. Drive within your marked lane. Straddling two lanes confuses other road users and blocks traffic in both lanes.

Question 10 of 11

On a multi-lane road, when may an ordinary car use a lane further to the right?

Show the answer

Answer D. India Drive Safe practice is to keep generally left and use lanes further right when overtaking, preparing for a right turn, passing an obstruction or following lane directions.

You see this sign at the start of a traffic island. What must you do?

Blue circle with a white arrow pointing diagonally down to the left
Show the answer
