Practice: Turn Left, Turn Right & Make U-Turns Safely

Choose an answer to see straight away whether it is right, and why. Read the rule first if you need to.

Question 1 of 12

Before turning left, a cyclist is riding alongside on your left. What should you do?

Show the answer

Answer A. When turning left you must give way to cyclists and slow-moving traffic. Never cut across a cyclist or motorcycle on your left.

Question 2 of 12

Where are U-turns not allowed?

Show the answer

Answer C. Indian regulations do not allow U-turns on major roads, highways or expressways, and wherever a sign prohibits them.

Question 3 of 12

You intend to turn right at a junction with marked lanes. Where should you be?

Show the answer

Answer D. Regulation 8 requires you to move into the right-most lane, or the lane marked for right turns, in good time before the turn.

Question 4 of 12

Approaching a junction, you realise you are in the wrong lane for your turn. What should you do?

Show the answer

Answer C. Do not cross solid turning-lane lines at the last moment. A missed turn is an inconvenience; a sudden lane change can cause a crash.

Question 5 of 12

You are making a right turn on a two-way road. What does 'cutting the corner' mean, and why avoid it?

Show the answer

Answer B. Make the turn controlled and predictable, and settle on the left side of the new road. Cutting the corner takes you into the path of vehicles waiting to come out.

Question 6 of 12

There is a gap in the median and no sign. Is a U-turn there automatically allowed?

Show the answer

Answer D. The fact that a vehicle can physically turn does not make a U-turn legal. Regulation 8 prohibits U-turns in several types of road and location.

Question 7 of 12

Where does Regulation 20 specifically prohibit U-turns?

Show the answer

Answer B. Regulation 20 prohibits making a U-turn inside a tunnel.

Question 8 of 12

A bus ahead of you is turning left and has swung out into the next lane. What should you do?

Show the answer

Answer B. Large vehicles may need the next lane to turn left. Their rear wheels cut close to the kerb, so never try to pass through the space on their left.

Question 9 of 12

When turning left using a slip lane, which is true?

Show the answer

Answer D. Regulation 8 directs you to use a slip lane where provided, but it does not remove your duty to observe and give way.

Question 10 of 12

You are correctly positioned and signalling to turn right, and oncoming traffic is close. What should you do?

Show the answer

Answer C. A signal shows your intention; it does not clear traffic from your path. Wait for a safe gap.

Question 11 of 12

What does this sign mean?

Red-bordered circle with a black U-shaped arrow crossed by a red diagonal line
Show the answer

Answer D. A U-turn is not allowed where this sign applies, even if there is a gap in the median.

Question 12 of 12

You are in the blue car and now realise you wanted to turn right. The lane lines are solid. What should you do?

Top view of three lanes separated by solid lines, with arrows: left lane turning left, middle straight, right lane turning right. The blue car is in the left lane
Show the answer

Answer D. Follow your lane's arrow. Do not cross solid lane lines at the last moment.
