Choose an answer to see straight away whether it is right, and why. Read the rule first if you need to.

Question 1 of 13 Safety-critical

You are behind a slow truck on a two-way road with a continuous solid white line in the centre. What should you do?

Show the answer

Answer A. Overtaking by crossing a continuous single or double solid line is prohibited. Wait until the marking and the road ahead allow a safe overtake.

Question 2 of 13

Are you allowed to exceed the speed limit to complete an overtake quickly?

Show the answer

Answer B. Regulation 14 expressly prohibits exceeding the maximum speed limit while overtaking. If you cannot complete the move legally and safely, it is not a safe opportunity.

Question 3 of 13 Safety-critical

Approaching a pedestrian crossing, may you overtake the vehicle in front?

Show the answer

Answer C. Regulation 14 prohibits overtaking at junctions, intersections and pedestrian crossings. A pedestrian may be hidden by the vehicle you are passing.

Question 4 of 13

A driver behind you wants to overtake. Should you switch on your right indicator to tell them it is safe?

Show the answer

Answer C. The right indicator must mean you intend to move or turn right. Regulation 14 expressly prohibits using it to signal permission to overtake.

Question 5 of 13

When is overtaking on the left allowed?

Show the answer

Answer A. Passing on the left is an exception allowed only in these situations, and only when it is safe.

Question 6 of 13

The vehicle ahead of you has just overtaken a truck. Is it safe for you to follow it straight away?

Show the answer

Answer D. Do not copy the vehicle ahead. There may be room for one overtake but not for two. Verify the whole manoeuvre yourself.

Question 7 of 13

Why should you not follow closely behind a truck you plan to overtake?

Show the answer

Answer C. Hold back so you can see further ahead and assess oncoming traffic before committing.

Question 8 of 13

Outside built-up areas, the driver ahead waves you to overtake. What should you do?

Show the answer

Answer D. Regulation 14 allows a short horn or headlight flash to signal an overtake outside built-up areas, but a signal from the driver ahead is not a guarantee. Verify it yourself.

Question 9 of 13

In which of these places is overtaking prohibited?

Show the answer

Answer B. Regulation 14 prohibits overtaking where signs indicate a School Zone, Hospital Zone or Construction Zone, among other places.

Question 10 of 13 Safety-critical

You are on a bend and cannot see far ahead. The vehicle in front is slow. What should you do?
